How to read your policy without a dictionary
4 minute read
Most policies open with a declarations page. It is the summary that names the people covered, the limits chosen, and the deductible you agreed to. If you read one page, read that one.
The next sections describe what is covered and what is not. The exclusions are not there to trick you. They draw the edges of the agreement so both sides know where coverage starts and stops.
When a term is unfamiliar, that is the moment to ask. A good advisor will translate it into a plain sentence. If you cannot explain a line back in your own words, the conversation is not finished.
Key takeaways
- The declarations page is the fastest way to understand your coverage
- Exclusions define the edges, not hidden traps
- Ask until you can explain each line in your own words
